Additional information

Understanding surface gravity wave turbulence (GWT) is important for meteorology, evaluation of gas exchange at the ocean surface, transport of pollutants and wind energy. Current theoretical and numerical models of GWT are limited and field measurements are not sufficiently detailed to fully characterise the chaotic nature of waves. This work presents a new technique and the first laboratory experiments on GWT where wave elevations were measured in time and space, providing the possibility to obtain statistics of chaotic waves in time and space domains, and allowing the differentiation of the different mechanisms of wave turbulence for the first time.
