A successful case study for developing “designer” materials under the guidance of fundamental modelling. The first attempt to correlate the redshift and chemical states of doping and host elements in Mn-doped TiO2, via the interaction between host elements, dopants and defects.

Work offers insightful guidance on materials processing for optimised performance.

The combined theoretical modelling and high-resolution XPS approach provides a powerful means in probing the fundamental origin for alloying/doping mechanisms.

The proposed high-resolution XPS valence band spectroscopy offers fingerprint evidence for the essential n- or p-doping characteristics.
