Pioneering work of a new field created by Geng who has been followed in the world. Besides synthesis, the crystal structure of the exceptionally long C60 nanowire has been solved in this work. Structural and compositional analyses have also enabled us to explain the observed geometry with an anisotropic molecular packing mechanism that has not been observed previously in C60 studies.

The material promises many important applications in the fields of electronics, energy and photonics. The developed growth model could be extended for use to grow different types of fullerene-based nanowires.
