Additional information

Award winning paper selected for 2011 Highlights Collection of the Journal. Based on 3 International Patents by Siores. Paper was co-authored with his PhD student and 2 Postdocs. Flexible piezoelectric fibre was developed using unique processing route. Harnessed energy from ceramic based piezoelectric fibre composite structures (PFCs) and polymer based piezoelectric strips, PVDF(polyvinylidene fluoride), were compared, subjected to various wind speed and rain conditions. PVDF generated higher voltage/power than brittle ceramic. Novel work demonstrated that energy harvesting for utilization in low power electronic devices in outdoor applications is possible by using flexible polymer based piezoelectric fibre / textile structures. This work has received international TV and media exposure.
