Acoustic monitoring of engine fuel injection based on adaptive filtering techniques
This paper develops a longstanding research theme of the authors, namely that of refining and optimising diesel fuel injection in real time and on a per cylinder basis. The paper shows how adaptive filtering can be used to extract precise real-time fuel injection timing characteristics and key performance parameters (like pressure rise profiles) from the acoustic signature of a diesel engine operating in a reverberant environment and throughout its working envelope. The work formed the basis for a successful funding bid to a large marine diesel engine manufacturer to embed this technology within their online engine health monitoring system.
