This monograph is based on extensive primary source research in the collections of 18 German archives, and on the analysis of numerous printed materials (newspapers, journals, contemporary books) that were consulted in various libraries. In addition, the presentation of the argument of this book required extensive reading of specialist literature in different fields, ranging from studies on the politics of veterans’ associations to work by literary scholars on the distribution and reception of war novels. The book is one of the very first attempts to analyse different media and arenas of war commemoration in Weimar in conjunction with one another.
