Numerical study of the effects of particle shape and polydispersity on permeability
First discrete body mechanical simulation of packs of sand grains with realistic i.e. non-idealised shapes and polydisperse sizes. Made possible by a new efficient sphere clustering algorithm for irregular/angular-shaped grains, (Garcia doi:10.1680/geot.8.T.037). This work formed one of five talks given on the theme ‘VGW -Virtual Geoscience Workbench for discontinuous systems’ presented at the International Symposium/RCUK-China Summer School on Discrete Element Methods and Numerical Modelling of Discontinuum Mechanics, Beijing, 24-30 Sept 2008. Two further invited papers on VGW (£470K, 2004-2009 EPSRC, GR/S42699/01), were presented by Latham at this symposium. VGW, now publicised through VGeST.net, illuminates several particulate packing simulation technologies.
