Additional information

The paper presents a computational analysis of a feature reported but not explained by numerous experimental studies on free-piston engines (FPEs), namely the influence of the piston motion on the in-cylinder processes. This research led to significant interaction with other international research groups, in particular collaboration, a joint FPE research laboratory and a funded PhD studentship (Boru Jia) with Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) funded by the Chinese Government (Prof Huihua Feng: fenghh@bit.edu.cn).
