English abstract

The volume brings together research-based articles on the memorialisation of the bombing of Europe’s great cities in World War II. There are case studies on Germany, France, Britain, the Netherlands, Italy and Spain, exploring the long-term cultural repercussions of cataclysmic events as they were played out on the level of individual urban communities. Dr Arnold's contribution, on the German city of Magdeburg, traces the attempts of local political elites to tap into the city’s war-time destruction in order to establish the town as a ‘martyr city’ within the context of the international Peace Movement of the 1980s.
