Double-weighted statement

This is the only intellectual biography in the English language of Miki Kiyoshi, one of Japan’s most famous philosophers of the pre-war period. Funded in the beginning by a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship, it was twelve years in the researching and writing. Most of the secondary materials relating directly to Miki and all his works are in pre-1945 Japanese which has up to 10,000 kanji (Chinese ideograms) and an archaic grammatical structure, requiring exceptionally rare language skills, deep understanding and long experience of Japanese culture to transcribe.
