Additional information

Beams constructed from thin elements can show global lateral-torsional buckling and local flange plate buckling in combination. A notoriously unstable response results with standard load capacity predictions being generally unsafe. Novel analytical and experimental studies have for the first time revealed a progressive “cellular” buckling response akin to highly unstable behaviour found in cylindrical shells. Directly led to advances for I-columns (doi:10.1016/j.tws.2013.08.009). Since thin-walled components are increasingly popular in construction, rigorous understanding of such behaviour is critically important. Invited presentations of the research at 2 international conferences (ESMC2012, Graz and CST2012, Dubrovnik) and an overseas research seminar (TU Berlin, 2011).
