Additional information

Full exploitation of tubular columns in construction is hampered by the lack of practical bolted connection configurations to open beams. The combined channel/angle forms described in this paper offer a new and effective solution. This research is the first to examine their seismic performance through experimental and analytical studies. Practical procedures for the design and detailing of this cost-effective connection type are provided. The work was commissioned by Tata Steel Tubes (a.h.orton@uwclub.net) and has led to further collaboration investigating the response of these connection details to other forms of severe loading resulting in 2 related journal publications (doi:10.1016/j.engstruct.2012.04.027, doi:10.1016/j.engstruct.2012.03.061).
