Spitzer edited a triple issue of Music Analysis on music and emotion (364 pp.), soliciting articles from fourteen participants to the First International Conference on Music and Emotion (Durham 2009), which he conceived and organised. The first analytical special issue dedicated to this theme, the volume

brings together multidisciplinary perspectives on music & emotion from musicology and ethnomusicology, theory and analysis, critical and analytic philosophy, empirical psychology and sound engineering. Spitzer also contributed a substantial (20,000-word) article, ‘Mapping the Human Heart: A Holistic Analysis of Fear in Schubert’, and a ‘Guest Editorial: The Emotion Issue’. The triple issue has received international attention, including being the subject of a 38-page discussion in Rivista di Analisi e teoria Musicale 18/2 (2012), pp. 93-131, by Mario Baroni, Luca Marconi and Susanna Pasticci.
