The Boulez performance/recording is a case study in Heaton's book chapter 'Instrumental performance in the twentieth century and beyond' and results from research carried out on the sketches and manuscripts at the Paul Sacher Stiftung. The sketches reveal the genesis of the piece, its relation to Boulez's vocal writing during the 1950s-60s and the formal experiments of the Third Piano Sonata together with close links to literary influences, particularly Mallarmé and Joyce. Boulez's working methods shown in a series of final drafts of the solo part reveal an approach that puts pitch and rhythm paramount with extended techniques being added as colouration in the final draft. Engagement with the original materials changes the player's approach to the work in significant ways as is documented in the article 'Contemporary Performance Practice and Tradition', where the issue of a performance tradition for this music is addressed together with analysis of previous performances by notable and influential players. This recording also includes a downloadable article by Heaton on the piece and the technicalities of the performance together with an account of research conducted at the Paul Sacher Stiftung.
