Additional information

The inherent redundancy of multi-phase machines makes them suitable for high-reliability aircraft applications such as engine-embedded generators. This paper provides a detailed analysis of the machine and converter under unbalanced conditions (some phases faulted) with a focus on the DC ripple current. Expressions are derived and validated showing how the operation of the remaining healthy phases may be controlled to eliminate the DC ripple current. The work was part-sponsored by Rolls-Royce, which has secured patent protection (US8395346 B2) for the technique (contact detils available; DOI:10.1049/iet-epa.2009.0217).
