English abstract

In this article I show on the basis of a number of personal names in the literature and in epigraphy that a firm decision as to their linguistic appurtenance is possible but that, at the same time, they provide onomastic (i.e. non-material) evidence for the cultural continuum between Celtic and Germanic long recognised by archaeologists. I furthermore show that progress in Celtic philology can help correct epigraphic readings and interpretations. Finally, I show that a number of Latin names in inscriptions from Roman Germany can be identified as translations but that the source language can likely be identified.
