Additional information

This chapter was originally presented as a conference paper in May 2010 at the annual Modern Interiors Research Centre conference at Kingston University; that year the theme of the conference was ‘Interior Lives’. My paper was selected for publication from the range of twenty-one papers presented. The work is derived from my PhD research and examines the work of Mary Anne, Lady Barker (1831-1911), author of The Bedroom and Boudoir in Macmillan & Co.’s ‘Art at Home Series’ published in 1878. It is based on previously unpublished archival materials (letters) held within the Macmillan Archive at the British Library and at Reading University; it locates The Bedroom and Boudoir in the context of Lady Barker’s other texts which draw upon her experiences across the British Empire and explores advice literature as a form of life writing.
