Additional information

This paper reported the first application of hourly meteorological hindcasting of local wind speeds from long-term measurements at all Scottish meteorological stations. The work was the basis of a policy document commissioned by the Scottish Government demonstrating that, 46% of the non-contiguous hours in a year, Scotland could meet at least 40% of electricity demand from 6 GW capacity of wind, wave and tidal sources (ISBN 0 7559 5029 1). The work led to the award of the following projects: Marina_Platform (FP7-241402); ARIES (EP/I035773/1); TROPOS (FP7-288192); and Leanwind (FP7-614020).
