Additional information

Key publication from the £2.3M FireGrid project, 50% TSB TP/3/DSM/6/I/16191 and 50% industrially sponsored (Debbie Smith, BRE; Barbara Lane, Arup; Peter Mundy, Xtralis) to exploit sensing and distributed computing technologies in fire fighting. FireGrid, subject of Horizon documentary (www.bbc.co.uk/sn/tvradio/programmes/horizon/broadband/tx/firegrid/highlights), demonstrated improved tactical decision-making by the incident commander in a full-scale multi-room fire (guy.foster@london-fire.gov.co.uk). Four industrially funded PhD studentships resulted from this work (£350k, Debbie Smith, BRE Director of Fire Sciences and Building Products). The work has inspired proposals for “cyber physical systems” as more generalised models of sensor networks that enhance interactions between the virtual and physical worlds (e.g. DoI:10.1016/j.pmcj.2011.03.003).
