Additional information

This paper presents a method, based on Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics, applied for the first time to high free volume Mixed Matrix Membranes (MMMs) with impermeable filler. Experimental measurements undertaken confirm that this approach predicts the separation properties of these MMM systems where classical models always fail. This work is developed further in DoI:10.1016/j.memsci.2012.03.009, Chapter 7 in ISBN-10: 0470746211, and led to a PhD CASE Award with Johnson-Matthey (Dr. Alvaro Amieiro, email available). Ferrari gave an invited presentation on this work at the prestigious Gordon-Kenan Research Seminar on Membranes: Materials and Processes, 2008 (http://www.grc.org/programs.aspx?year=2008&program=grad_membr).
