Experiments and simulations of direct shear tests: porosity, contact friction and bulk friction
This paper presented novel experiments and DEM simulations impacting on academic and industrial practice. It brought about the leadership of the €3.2M FP7 PARDEM Project (www.pardem.eu) involving 8 companies (Hermann Feise, BASF; Hossein Ahmadian, Proctor and Gamble; Marco Ramaioli, Nestle) and 5 universities (s.luding@utwente.nl, h.zetzener@tu-bs.de). The work was further developed (DoI:10.1016/j.mechmat.2009.01.017; DoI:10.1016/j.powtec.2011.05.022) and led to invited keynote presentations (5th Asian Particle Technology Symposium, 2012; 6th International Conference for Conveying and Handling of Particulate Solids, 2009). Haertl’s resulting PhD thesis received the European 2010 EFCE Excellence Award in Mechanics of Particulate Solids (http://www.efce.info/EFCE+Awards/Excellence+Awards+_+Young+Researcher+Awards/Excellence+Award+in+Mechanics+of+Particulate+Solids/Award+winner.html).
