Flow Transition within an Evaporating Binary Mixture Sessile Drop
This international research partnership identified a flow transition during the evaporation of alcohol/water sessile (i.e. sitting) droplets that had not hitherto been observed, exploiting high-speed micro-imaging. It has application in ink-jet printing, biomedical diagnostics and the cooling of micro-electronic devices etc. Follow-on work is continuing at Kyushu in Japan (takata@mech.kyushu-a.ac.jp). This work has led directly to new collaborations: evaporative cooling with Brunel, QMUL (Tassos.Karayiannis@brunel.ac.uk, j.w.rose@qmul.ac.uk ) and Thermacore Europe Ltd (Ryan McGlen, email available); and biomedical disease diagnosis with Imperial (o.matar@imperial.ac.uk).
