Double-weighted statement

This book uses a case study of Missouri’s Bootheel to demonstrate the connection between working-class protest and religious revivalism. Roll deeply mined local archives to recover the lost voices of black and white farmers and also drew extensively on the records of national

organisations to establish the context and significance of what is far more than a local story.

This research provides new interpretative insight into an area of the United States neglected by historians and, in emphasising the importance of evangelical religion, reconceptualises our understanding of agrarian protest.
