This book is the outcome of a multi-disciplinary research project led by Dr Li YU and funded by the Chinese government. This is a substantial project which took five years to complete and focused upon developing the first comprehensive system of indicators for progressing low-carbon city development in China, the country with the largest CO2 emissions in the world. This research effort involved detailed empirical investigation across China’s developing eco-cities, and produced a substantial piece of work of 488,000 words.

This book is an research outcome of the first comprehensive system of indicators for progressing low carbon eco-city development in China. It consists of seven chapters that cover the contents of the underpinning concepts of Chinese low carbon eco-city development; theoretical and policy reviews of sustainability and low carbon eco-city; updated actions, problems and challenges of low carbon eco-cities development in China; detailed study of three selected pilot low carbon eco-cities to explore various approaches in diverse climate and economic contexts; rationales and methodologies of low carbon eco-city indicator system production; and the formula of each indicator.
