Additional information

Appearing in a new, multidisciplinary journal concerned with the history and sociology of changing patterns of mobility in the twentieth century, this article is the first contribution of its kind. It seeks to describe and compare varying conditions in Britain, the USA, France, Germany and Scandinavia during the world’s first great road traffic accident crisis in the interwar years. Some of the underlying themes have recently been presented in reworked form in a keynote address at a major international conference, ‘Accidents and Emergencies: Risk, Welfare, and Safety in Europe and North America, c. 1750-2000, involving historians, sociologists and policy-makers, and held at Oxford Brookes University, September 9-11, 2013.
