Additional information

While other people have talked about seeing mental health service users as recovery heroes, e.g. Patricia Deegan (1996), I was the first person to publish a paper on this theme. Since then I have started a new series on remarkable lives, which is ongoing, and has already featured another five people with long term mental health problems.

J Carson came up with the idea for this book. It was based around two sets of articles that he had already co-authored with other people: five papers on recovery heroes and four on historical recovery heroes published in the journal Mental Health and Social Inclusion. He wrote the book proposal, he was first author of the Introduction and Conclusion section though he let a young journalist have first authorship for the book. J Carson was the only one of the four co-editors of this book who wrote something for all 21 chapters.
