Humphrey Newton (1466-1536): an early Tudor gentleman
This monograph draws on extensive unpublished archival material housed in eleven national and regional record offices and libraries across Britain. It required the analysis of a diverse range of challenging sources, including literary manuscripts, medical treatises, court records, cartularies, wills, rentals and monumental effigies. In approach it is an interdisciplinary study that uses empirical historical methodology and literary criticism to explore the cultural, spiritual, economic and political dimensions of the English aristocracy. The claim for double-weighting is based on 'The collection and analysis of a considerable body of material' and 'The use of primary sources which are especially extensive'.
