A spectroscopic approach to imaging and quantification of cartilage lesions in human knee joints.
This paper laid the foundation for further collaboration with the group from Linköping University in Sweden. In that collaboration, we demonstrate that the thickness of articular cartilage can be determined in real-time by analysis of the arthroscopy video camera output (Johansson, Kuiper et al., Arthroscopy 28(2012):1513-23). By using this technique, a cartilage thickness-map can be overlaid or projected next to the video image that is seen by the surgeon. This technique has attracted the attention of two global manufacturers of arthroscopic equipment (Conmed Linvatec, Largo, FL and Arthrex, Santa Barbara, CA) who supported this study. Contact: cspeier@linvatec.com and Mark.Thompson@Arthrex.com).
