Additional information

A novel magnetic power split device which can be operated as a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is proposed. Potential applications in hybrid vehicles and wind turbines are discussed and the simulation and experimental results on a first prototype of its kind are presented. The work has been undertaken in collaboration with Magnomatics Ltd, a spin-out from the University of Sheffield. Results from the first prototype have attracted concrete interest from leading vehicle OEMs, and Magnomatics have secured funding supported by the Technology Strategy Board, to work with Ford Motor Car Company and Caterpillar Engines on taking this technology to deployment.
