Additional information

A novel method of integrating a magnetic gear with a permanent magnet machine to realise a ‘pseudo’ direct drive with at least twice the torque-density of the state-of-the-art machine. The research was funded by EPSRC (GR/S70685/01), and resulting patents led to a spin-out, Magnomatics Ltd, which now employs more than 20 staff with a turnover of £1.4M for 2012. Interest in the technology has been high, and evaluation from the Ministry of Defence (MOD), for example, led to contracts totalling £1M to Magnomatics, for the manufacture of a 300kW prototype for naval propulsion.
