Additional information

A linear electromagnetic actuator employing magnetic screw-nut assembly is described and analysed in the paper. The work is highly original and shows the proposed linear electromagnetic actuation can improve force density by an order of magnitude compared to the current state-of-the art, while being jam-free and fault tolerant. Such highly efficient, light-weight and compact linear electromagnetic actuators are required in many applications, such as manufacture automation, flight control surface actuation, wave power generation (P. Rasmussen, Aalborg University, Demark) and active vehicle suspension, etc. The work raised significant interest from EADS UK (Graham Dodds, Graham.Dodds@eads.com) for applications inflight control surface actuation.
