Additional information

This paper presents the first exact analysis of piezoelectric transformer based power converters driven by an inductor-less half-bridge offering significant improvements in prediction accuracy, previous methods provided optimistic predictions. Research was undertaken as part of a PhD studentship funded by the IeMRC (EPSRC). As a result a KTP with Selex (Peter Heywoodpeter.heywood3@selexgalileo.com) investigated the feasibility of using piezoelectric transformers for avalanche photodiode detectors. From the designs developed Selex are currently looking at practical issues such as lifetime (ageing) and sensitivity to radiation. This work also led to collaboration with Michael Andersen's research team at DTU, Denmark.
