This article introduces an innovative method to determine total lipids in microalgae that is very sensitive and more reproducible than existing techniques, especially with respect to determining lipids in microalgae with recalcitrant cell walls. It is directly applicable in the area of biofuel production from microalgae. The work led to a further publication (Analytica Chimica Acta, 2013, 776, 31-40) and in combination with other publications by the group led to a transnational (UK and India) collaborative BBSRC grant (BB/K020633/1) involving 3 UK and 2 Indian Institutes.
