Significance of output:

This paper describes an international collaboration that led to the first successful production of nanowire structures using ion-track lithography. These structures can be used for thermoelectric energy harvesting and the resulting devices were demonstrated to offer comparable sensitivity with competing technologies, but the improved density of thermo-junctions results in a 30% increase in Seebeck coefficient. This increase in performance allows these to be used in small temperature difference (<10C) applications (i.e. smart clothing). The work led to patent GB 0722968. The concepts have subsequently been adopted by researchers in China, India, Europe and Sandia National Labs, USA.
