Building stone condition monitoring using specially designed compensated optical fiber humidity sensors
This interdisciplinary research is significant in showing, for the first time, the value to conservators of historic buildings of specially designed and specifically tailored fibre optic humidity sensors to monitor water-borne degradation to historic limestones. The field tests carried out with collaborators demonstrated enhanced performance and convenience in use over conventional electrical sensors under identical conditions. The superior speed of response of the specially designed sensors, their resistance to long term wetness and their passive nature has enabled a new and versatile tool for use in conservation of historic structures suffering water-borne damage.
