This research investigated, for the first time, the method of insertion of lateral stess gauges in polymeric materials testing under shock. It was found that good contact between the gauge and specimen can compensate for use of different methods of insertion. This result has been used to improve the hydrocode models used by AWE as demonstrated by Elliot et al. (Experimental and computational investigation of lateral gauge response in polycarbonate, APS conference proceeding, Shock Compression of Condensed Matter 2011, page 458 Published 2012).
