Additional information

This paper is an output from an on-going multi-disciplinary research collaboration with Kitakyushu University, Japan, building on work on functionally coated fibre optic long period gratings that was pioneered at Cranfield (awarded 1st prize in the Frontier Science and Measurement Category of the National Measurements awards, 2004). Further development of the work in this paper to develop a point of care diagnostic instrument, in collaboration with the Open University, Addenbrookes Hospital and Kitakyushu University, is to be funded under an EPSRC grant, EP/L010437/1, awarded October 2013.
