This paper was an output of an on-going industrial collaboration with EADS Astrium under an EPSRC responsive mode grant (EP/H019839). It forms part of a programme of research on odometry instrumentation developed for space exploration rovers and other autonomous vehicles with improved accuracy compared to current methods (Lester.WAUGH@astrium.eads.net).
