Additional information

This study is focused on the characterization of spherical particles used in advanced testing (Cubical Cell Apparatus) to validate discrete element method (DEM) simulations. It provides a new direction for describing the mechanical behaviour of granular material at the grain scale. Real properties of the particles were measured, including shape, stiffness, contact friction and surface roughness. The work has fundamental applications as a new methodology for selecting particles suitable for use in DEM studies is proposed. This work is part of a project supported by EPSRC, Grants EP/G064180 and EP/G064954.
