Additional information

The overall aim of the project, completed in 2012, was to understand the behaviour of odorants in the atmosphere and the consequent impact on odour perception, and then develop methodologies for the HPA to adopt in handling enquiries/complaints concerning odours. These are now operational – see the link below. The paper treats a very unusual case of long range odour transport, something about which there had been much speculation but no proper investigation until now, and shows the circumstances in which this can occur.
