Additional information

Oral cancer is the eighth most common cancer worldwide, over 650,000 cases/year (5000 in UK). As there is no simple and cheap early detection tool life expectancy (5 years) is less than 50%. This is the first paper to show conclusively the differentiation of oral cancer cells from healthy cells by their electrophysiology using dielectrophoresis. A clinical study of 64 cancer patients and volunteers was undertaken with Eastman Dental Institute (S.Fedele@ucl.ac.uk, S.Porter@ucl.ac.uk), leading to a £199k NIHR-funded study (with UCL, Royal Marsden, Bradford Infirmary) to validate the detection process. An invited talk presented this work to the American Electrophoresis Society.
