Additional information

This invention resulted from mapping technology, market and medical research alongside intellectual property landscaping through a Multiple Perspective Problem Framing approach (English 2007, 2009, 2011). It is the world’s first non-invasive commercially viable in-home treatment for diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration.

The global prevalence of diabetes is expected to rise to 438 million by 2030, all are at risk of developing diabetic retinopathy that is treatable by this device.

The research began March 2010 as a £308k tri-party project involving Polyphotonix Ltd, Iconet Ltd and Northumbria University, a further £7.5m has been raised and the device is currently undergoing clinical trials.
