Arrays of giant octagonal and square cylinders by liquid crystalline self-assembly of X-shaped polyphilic molecules
A new type of liquid-crystal is obtained from new tetraphilic X-shaped molecules in this interdisciplinary international study. Large square and stretched octagonal cylinders form a complex 2D honeycomb-like array. This work shows, for the first time, how highly ordered networks of large cylinders can be produced from relatively small molecules. The cylinders have the largest cross-section in any cellular liquid crystal, opening new ways of surface nanopatterning by self-assembly, as well as entrapping within the cylinders large guest moieties such as drugs, OLEDs and plasmonic nanoparticles.
