Additional information

This paper forms part of a recognised line of work in acoustic emission (AE) source location (DOI:10.1016/j.ymssp.2005.12.010, 10.1016/j.ndteint.2003.10.006), including a journal annual best paper prize (DOI:10.1243/095440806X78829). It presents a novel, systematic approach to the problem of simulation of AE wave propagation in solids. The approach opens up new avenues for quantitative AE analysis as it provides a framework for dealing with complex geometries with multiple interfaces and harmonises digital representations of structures with practical AE measurements. Plans are in place to use the approach in a variety of monitoring/inspection applications including industrial and medical ones.
