Cratinus and the Art of Comedy
The first four criteria all apply. This monograph is the product of seven years of dedicated research. It covers an extensive, diverse and complex range of primary material (direct and indirect fragments; ancient testimonia; iconographical material; comparable literary works), and a huge volume of secondary literature from different fields of classics, including archaeology and ancient history. The diverse hermeneutic tools employed – ranging from papyrological, linguistic and metrical analysis to ancient literary criticism, genre theory, intertextuality, religion, ritual, and theatre studies – necessitated extensive interdiciplinary reading and the acquisition of new skills.
