Drawing upon unique access to the personal archive of British-born film and TV director Peter Watkins, this article examines Watkins’ ultimately unsuccessful attempt in the early 1980s to make a film on the life of Swedish playwright August Strindberg. The article traces the gestation and eventual cancellation of the project and of how, ultimately, it was revived in the early 1990s in alternative form as The Freethinker (1994) - a student video production in which Watkins took on the role of the students’ supervisor, encouraging them to work with the material in a more equal, collaborative and collective mode.
