Additional information

This book results from the editor's British Academy-funded research collaboration with Bulgarian colleagues. A key aspiration for the volume was to make otherwise unavailable work from Bulgaria accessible to specialists, and the themes were selected by Haynes following extended research visits to Bulgaria. Of particular importance is the coverage of ritual and religion, one of Haynes’ principal research interests: the volume presents a coherent set of papers that demand a rethink of 'Thracian' religion. The subject matter also reflects Haynes' interest in the particular military relationship between the Roman state and the indigenous populations of the Balkans. Haynes created this output as leader of the collaborative research project: he provides the first chapter, organised the conference session at which some of the papers were discussed, invited additional submissions, edited the volume, and assisted with translation.
