Conceived in 2006 as an expansive history of ideas around the concepts of One and Nothing, the book crosses over multiple disciplines. It offers a definitive exegesis of Auden’s lengthy poem “The Sea and the Mirror”, and also traces conceptual histories through science, religion, philosophy, cultural studies and feminism. SUNY Press encouraged the addition of a chapter on ethics, as well as further introductory and concluding material.
