Double-weighted statement

This 130,000 word monograph is based on Pennell’s PhD thesis and therefore occupied the majority of her research time during the period 2003-2011. It is densely researched, utilizing a large amount of unpublished primary source material from over 70 archives around the UK, Ireland, France and the United States of America. The material was dissected using a systematic comparative methodology that involved both quantitative and qualitative analysis. It is also founded upon extensive reading to allow in-depth engagement with national and international historiography.
