Double-weighted statement

This monograph is the result of a substantial three year Wellcome Trust research grant. It draws on a wide range material from archives and repositories (including the National Women’s Register Archive at the Women’s Library and Mass Observation at Sussex), film, literature and the analysis of over twenty years of published medical texts on depression and anxiety. It also incorporates the oral and written testimonies of thirty-six women. The monograph challenges existing literature on post-war women’s experience of the home and significantly refines previous feminist accounts of the environmental determinants of psychological illness in women.
